Our trainer certification course

PSD Academy & Registry offers an intense week long training course followed by a year practical application, monthly progress checks, support, and continued education. This is designed for those individuals that desire to learn how to train service dogs and become professional and certified service dog trainers. However, many individuals that want to learn how to train their own service dogs for their individual needs choose to take our course because of the vast knowledge they gain, highly advanced training, certification, and continued support that we provide.

What can I expect to get out of this training course?

Upon completion of the initial week long course, you will receive your Service Dog "Apprentice" Certificate and ID's. The training process continues for an additional year for support, progress checks, video submissions, and troubleshooting. You will be asked to send videos monthly for evaluation and progress checks.

Our goal is to produce exceptional service dogs and service dog trainers. At the end of the year, or upon mastery of your training skills (whichever comes later), you will receive your Service Dog Trainer Certificate and ID's. Your contact information will then be posted on our website for people in need of service dog trainers in their area to be able to contact you. We are contacted on a regular basis by people all over the country, Puerto Rico, Canada, Germany, and the Virgin Islands who are looking for service dog trainers in their area.

What is the training course?

This is a course like any other college course. It consists of classroom style, hands on application, and homework.

You must complete the week course, the year of monthly video submissions showing progress, and keep up with your monthly homework assignments (specific obedience and service tasks) to receive your service dog trainer course completion certificate and be posted on the website. This course requires time and dedication to complete. Our goal is to produce exceptional service dog trainers and service dogs. Please decide if you have the time to dedicate to the course prior to enrolling.

Classes will be held in a meeting room or in a home setting, as well as public settings such as stores and parks. Classes are held daily from 9am to 5pm with an hour break for lunch at 12pm. Each handler and dog team will have homework nightly which will be practicing different service tasks and obedience. Each individual will bring their own project dog, or will be provided with a project dog for the week. You will be teaching your project dog so that you are getting hands on experience. You will also be rotating project dogs to gain experience working with many different dogs as not all dogs learn by using the same method. We are experts in every training method from dogs that are easily treat, praise, or toy motivated to dogs that are a bit more stubborn and need a more firm training style. With our instruction and rotating project dogs you will gain experience in each method.
